A round rich palate with a good backbone of tight, but deliciously mouth-watering tannins. Generously flavoured but retaining elegance. Structured to age beautifully over the long term but round enough to be enjoyed while the primary fruits are fresh and vibrant.

Alcohol by Vol.:
Alcohol: 14.5%

2019
Bottle size:

Bouquet:
Rich ripe blackberry/cassis fruit nose integrated augmented through an influence of tight grained French oak to give cedar and cinnamon nuances. Denitively Coonawarra.
Palate:
A round rich palate with a good backbone of tight, but deliciously mouth-watering tannins. Generously flavoured but retaining elegance. Structured to age beautifully over the long term but round enough to be enjoyed while the primary fruits are fresh and vibrant.
Cellaring:
Excellent on release and will age over the next decade or more. Expect cedar and cigar box characters to develop with time.
Winemaking:
It was a privilege to be able grow wines in Coonawarra in 2019. Cabernet ripened to perfection. Our Estate grown fruit was de-stemmed and put into fermenters immediately after harvesting. We choose to allow as an aerobic as possible a fermentation with air being used facilitated the maceration on skins. Some of the fermenting juice was allowed to complete fermentation in new French oak while the remainder of the ferment was given extended time on skins to round out the tannin structure. Ultimately, the wine was matured in French Oak for 18 months before being prepared for bottling.
Background:
Leconfield is situated in the heart of Australia’s famous Coonawarra with its rich Terra Rosa soil over limestone providing the ideal environment for growing premium Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard was founded in 1974 by pioneering oenologist Sydney Hamilton who at 76 years of age had the ambition to produce the classic Australian red wine. The first red vineyard he planted was what we call 'The Front 20' – twenty rows of Cabernet grown on Terra Rossa soil on his newly acquired sheep farm. Much of that area has since been replanted but the block's name enshrines its significance to the Estate. Time has validated his choice of Coonawarra as a fantastic place to do just that. Today the estate remains a family wine business owned by Dr Richard and Jette Hamilton and is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller patches of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Petit Verdot and complemented with the white varieties of Riesling and Chardonnay. The Hamilton family have been growing grapes and wine in South Australia since 1837.
Vintage Conditions:
Coonawarra had an excellent vintage in 2019. Above average rainfall provided the moisture needed to sustain the vines through what was otherwise a much drier than average growing and ripening season. Above average temperatures in late February and early March saw veraison complete and set the course for even ripening leading up to vintage. Harvest dates were in line with long term averages with whites ready in mid-March and reds from late March to mid-April. Fruit flavour is a stand out with good natural soft acidity in Riesling and Chardonnay and medium to full body in reds which show both power and elegance.
