The 2022 Reserve Cabernets is a Field Blend with a all fruit coming from vines on the Leconfield Winery Block. Fitting with the nature of a field blend the fruit was co fermented with 14 days on skins. Co fermentation is a winemaking practice in which varieties are harvested and fermented together to allow the characteristics of each variety to meld together rather than the more common practice of blending post fermentation. The 2022 Reserve Cabernets was matured on oak for 27 months – 33% New Taransaud French Hogsheads, 67% 3 year old French Hogsheads.

A beautifully elegant wine, the palate has generous flavour and persistence with round silky tannins.

Bouquet:
Ripe cassis, plum and chocolate with a background of cedar from well integrated, balanced oak.
Palate:
A rich, full palate of plush fruits. Tannins are round and succulent, giving length, persistence and longevity.
Cellaring:
Appealing with its vibrancy on release and has the structure for 10 or more years cellaring to provide more complexity.
Winemaking:
Fruit was harvested at night to take advantage of cooler temperatures, then de-stemmed and fermented for 8-13 days on skins. Following pressing and malo-lactic fermentation, the wine was filled to predominantly French oak and received several rackings. The wine was blended then returned to oak for further maturation.
Background:
Richard Hamilton is the fifth generation of his family to be involved in wine production in Australia. Richard Hamilton 1st planted some of the earliest vines in South Australia in 1837. His great, great grandson, Dr Richard Hamilton, has continued the family wine tradition on his own estate vineyards since 1972.
Vintage Conditions:
2021 was an excellent vintage in McLaren Vale. Early spring rainfall provided the moisture necessary for new vine growth. A very dry November was ideal for flowering which occurred quickly and provided good fruit set. Mild conditions in December and January with replenishing rainfall in late January and early February was followed by a late summer free from high temperatures. The scene was set for later that normal veraison and slower ripening. Chardonnay ripened in mid February and the reds in March and April, making it a later vintage than average. Wine quality is outstanding.
