Over the years the Leconfield Riesling has taken its place amongst the best examples in Australia. Our 50-year-old Riesling vineyard comprises some of the original planting’s on the estate; mature vines which produce a crop of intensely flavoured fruit with wonderful varietal character every year.
Sydney Hamilton planted the 6 acre (2.6 ha) Riesling vineyard in 1974 and we have now completed a restructuring of the vineyard to sustain it over the next 40 or more years. Harvesting took place in the cold early morning and grapes were placed in our air-bag press within minutes of picking. This single batch of free-run juice was cold settled and cool fermented with some light solids using an aromatic yeast to enhance its fragrant fruit aromas. Following fermentation, the wine was allowed to settle on its yeast lees then ultimately received a light fining to aid clarification.

Most people are well and truly retired at 76. Not oenologist Sydney Hamilton, whom after 60 years in winemaking decided to establish Leconfield. Hence the name 76. This is just beautiful. It combines the elegance you get with Coonawarra with the inherent power and structure of Cabernet from this great region. A mix of tobacco leaf and blackcurrant with a little oyster shell minerality. Firm fine chalky tannins contribute to the controlled restraint of the palate which extends effortlessly to a very long finish. Destined for a lengthy stay in the cellar.

2021 was a wonderful vintage for the Coonawarra region and this is an exciting addition to what has been on offer. An inky opaque purple, with a superb ‘Cabernet’ nose. Seamless in structure with a seductive texture and bright acidity, this is fresh, well balanced and offering excellent length. The nose exhibits notes of blackberries, chocolate, cloves, cedar, graphite, tobacco leaves and cocoa powder. Much to like here and this will drink beautifully for the next ten to fifteen years. An excellent example of a Coonawarra Cabernet at the top of its game.
